Dragon*Con 2010 Thursday through Tuesday (for me, anyway), September 2nd - 7th A little party we throw for about 40,000 of our closest friends. I'm the director of the band-tables area, and also handle the acoustic stage scheduling, at the con.
ProgPower USA XI Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 8th - 11th The world's finest indoor metal festival, geared toward power- and progressive-metal. I'm proud to be sponsoring a band -- Tyr -- again for this event, for the 9th time. That's the longest of any individual sponsor.
Rush, at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater at Encore Park Wednesday Sept. 29th The incomparable Rush, and they're performing their legendary album Moving Pictures in its entirety? This will be splendid!
Katatonia, Swallow the Sun, Orphaned Land Monday October 4th This is a helluva lineup, full of talent and win. It will be great to see Orphaned Land, who I sponsored for ProgPower a few years ago, again!

Recommended Sites, Merchants, Places, etc

The following places have earned my recommendation for the reasons shown:
  • DeepDiscount.com -- DVDs, CDs, even books, and always free shipping (even on heavy things like media storage shelving!). Quick as hell delivery, and competitive prices and sales on DVDs, especially box-sets. Always worth a price-check before buying anywhere else. About a third of my DVD collection has come from this excellent merchant.
  • SportsMansGuide.com -- I've gotten everything from crossbow pistols and weather radios to leather belts and long leather duster coats from these guys. Outstanding mail-order catalog and website.
  • The End Records, Omega Mail-order -- one of the best places on the web for metal CDs, especially extreme metal, and always free shipping. Service is usually swift as well!
  • The Laser's Edge -- I've been a customer of Ken Golden and the Laser's Edge since before he had a website and published a print catalog. One of the best places on the Web for progressive rock, metal and similar CDs.
  • Frys.com -- great brick-and-mortar store where I've bought several items including my stalwart laptop -- their mail-order service, under the Outpost.com name, has also been a great online ordering shop for years.
  • International Tokamak Fusion Research Project -- one day, power plants using this safe method of nuclear power will provide our energy needs. Until then, keep listening to your media and keep banging the rocks together, guys! Eventually, maybe, we'll wake up.
  • Atlanta Gas Prices.com -- Gas prices for us, by us. This site has probably saved me close to $50 on gas in the last 6 months just from knowing who had the cheapest gas prices in the area!
  • Georgia Gas Prices.com -- the statewide version of the above. (I have to post prices for Auburn and Barrow County on this site.)
  • Apollon Auto Repair, on Shallowford Rd just west of I-85 in Chamblee -- that rarest of rarities, an honest garage. Owned and operated by Greeks (Tassos and George), they've worked on my cars as needed since 1987, with honesty and fairness.
  • Fantastic Contraptions -- build your machine to solve a physical puzzle! Highly addictive and fun! Turn your volume down before clicking on the link, though....
  • WebSoduku -- it even lets you cheat. (I try not to.) Great site, and with minimal advertising.
  • Warehouse 23 Basement -- go ahead, open a box. You might find the Ark of the Covenant.......or the polar bear from Lost.... (From the cool, if insane, people at Steve Jackson Games)
  • Blue Ball fixed animated GIF -- turn your volume down before clicking this one....which has to be seen to be believed. And then you start tracking the movement of the little balls through this Rube Goldberg contraption, and then suddenly you've lost a half-hour.....or more.....freeow....
  • Perpetual Bubble Wrap -- totally useless since the bubbles regrow after you pop 'em, but if you just HAVE to work out some online aggression.....

UpdatedPast happenings, news, and updated pages

Everyone's invited to tag along or ride up on one of these trips!
I removed the links to info about the huge rockslide back in November that was blocking US Hwy 64...just a few miles from Blue Hole. The rockslide, which was captured live by a video crew, was pretty amazing, though!
July 27th, 2010 WREK 91.1 FM WREKage playlists updated.
Amazingly, we had a pretty full crew, so I started the show from midnight 'til 1:15am or so, then Brian M. and Steve Cannon took over afterwards.

7 January 2008 Condolences -- and yet, congratulations -- go out to two people I know, Kynt and Vyxsin, who were one of the teams competing on CBS's popular show The Amazing Race. (They were the "dating goths" couple.) Although they were eliminated on the 12/30 broadcast, they still got to see parts of the world most of us will never see, and will always have amazing stories to tell of their worldwide journey.

Music Stuff

  • ProgPower USA: In 2005 I sponsored Sweden's amazing [Therion] for ProgPower USA VI in September.
In September 2006 I sponsored Denmark's excellent technical death metal band Mercenary for ProgPower.
In 2007 I sponsored Finland's power-metal masters Sonata Arctica for ProgPower USA VIII, and in September 2008 we again went to Finland, where I co-sponsored the seminal death/folk metal band Amorphis for their ProgPower USA appearance!
In 2009, I co-sponsored the return of Israel's astonishing metal band Orphaned Land, and later this year I will be sponsoring Tyr, from the Faroe Islands! ProgPower USA XI will again be in September 2010!
Pics from all of my ProgPower sojourns are indexed here!
  • I'm a deejay and on-air host here, every Friday night: WREKage (official site). Friday nights, 91.1 WREK-FM, Atlanta's longest-running "tr00" metal show. Starts at midnight, ends when we get tired or 6am, whichever is earlier. :)
  • My archive of older WREKage radio-show playlists, plus a history of the show and my involvement with it
  • I'm also a deejay online: Click here for my SeismicRadio show details and playlists
  • My CD List -- well over 2,200 and growing!

And now, a sad wrap-up for the bottom of the page. I helped sponsor the amazing Finnish metal band Nightwish at the ProgPower USA IV festival back in September, 2003. This marked my second consecutive year as a festival co-sponsor, my third year of being involved in some aspect of the planning (I helped hook founder/promoter Glenn Harveston up with the Earthlink Live venue in 2001) and my fourth year attending the event in the States.
Why sponsor? Why help out the festival? Because it's the finest and best-run progressive music event in the Western Hemisphere, if not the world. Glenn and his crew run a tight ship and deliver a quality festival for fans and bands alike. I'm proud to be an ongoing part of the festival now for over ten years.
And now, the sad part.... I'm even more proud to have helped fulfil the dying wish of one very special Nightwish fan: to see them perform live...a magical, yet sad event that has since been immortalized by the band on their CD Once. R.I.P., Marc Brueland! May the ships carry you West to the Undying Lands.
